La Restinga national park was established in 1974, and it covers 18,862 hectares of area. It contains a 22-km long sandbar (in Spanish "restinga") and a network of canals. The park is rich in ecosystems, encompassing marine habitats, littoral zones, lagoons, and mangrove swamps.
